The story of Israel's most prominent spy, Eli Cohen, who infiltrated the Syrian government in the 1960s. A talk with Avraham Cohen, the only surviving brother of Israel's greatest spy Eli Cohen.

Eli Cohen successfully entered the upper echelons of the Syrian government as an undercover Mossad agent under the alias of Kamai Amin Ta’abet from 1962 until his exposure and public execution on May 18, 1965.

During these three years, he infiltrated the Ba’ath Party and its regime with such brilliance forming close ties with all its leaders, including Syrian President Amin el Hafiz. The secrets he obtained and passed on to Israel proved crucial to Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War, especially in Israel’s capturing of the Golan Heights. Eli Cohen’s surviving brother, Avraham, will reveal behind the scenes insight into the Eli Cohen story. He will share his family’s experience as well as the ongoing struggle to have Cohen’s remains returned to Israel.

He had infiltrated the regime with such brilliance that he was being considered for the position of Syrian Minister of Defense. Cohen was 41 years old at the time of his death. He left behind a widow, three daughters and a son. His remains have not been returned to Israel despite many diplomatic attempts to ensure a proper resting place for “our man in Damascus.”

Avraham Cohen, Before retiring in 2009, was the senior economist for the industrial development bank of Israel, in charge of feasibility studies for the electronics, high-tech and defense industries. He currently does volunteer work for the Weizmann Historical Archive and is active in the Association for the Preservation of the Legacy of Eli Cohen.
